Joy Hakim's three-volume series is filled with gorgeous art, satellite maps, and stories of the
people behind the world's astonishing scientific accomplishments.
Joy Hakim’s much-acclaimed series The Story of Science is a wonderful three-volume set for anyone interested in
learning about science. These three books explore the discoveries and experiments that shaped modern science.
Following Aristotle, Newton, and Einstein through their innovations, Ms. Hakim gently introduces readers to basic
concepts of science, in chronological order. Filled with useful notes and colorful illustrations, these books are sure to
delight beginning scientists.
The first book, Aristotle Leads the Way, starts at the very beginning: the universe. It then progresses onward to the
elements, geometry, and much more. An interesting subject it covers is origin of math as we know it, from the ancient
Mesopotamians, Babylonians, Egyptians, and ancient Greeks. One interesting story Hakim relates concerns how
Archimedes mastered the principles of density by inventing his famous contrivance known as Archimedes’ screw. The
ingenious device works by lifting water through a covered screw, and has proved to be quite useful for irrigation and
other purposes.
The next volume, Newton at the Center, covers some scientific discoveries of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This
volume discusses Galileo, Copernicus, and Faraday, showing how the scientific revolution developed in Europe as crucial
concepts of chemistry and physics began to be discovered. Hakim’s description of the difficult-to-read periodic table is
explained with helpful charts and diagrams.
In Einstein Adds a new Dimension, the satisfying sequel’s cheerful tone and helpful definitions make it a great read.
Covering sub-atomic particles, quantum physics, and special relativity, this engaging book demonstrates many scientific
discoveries. From astronomy in the universe to minute atoms, everything in modern science is explained.
Containing everything from Eratosthenes’ prime number chart to Stephen Hawkins' theories of cosmology and black
holes, this great series will answer all your questions. Ms. Hakim’s books explain even the most difficult concepts using
colorful diagrams and beautiful photographs. The Story of Science is much more than just a science textbook; it also
contains history, art, and math woven together in a delightfully engaging story.
